Initial fieldwork for 2014 began on February 22 when the 2013 summer team and Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) biologists captured a female Maine black bear in her winter den. Her initial radio collar was replaced with a GPS satellite collar, which has provided up to 800 locations so far, including the den she moved into after her capture.

During the summer months, the crew of eight student interns and two student leaders acquired permissions from 69 landowners to access more than 10,000 acres of land for trapping bears for the study. Preliminary findings indicate that females in the area have larger ranges than in other parts of the state. Current Unity College student projects include analyses of locational data to determine habitat use, movement patterns, and activity centers.
