Often, Unity College graduates are prized by employers for their “job ready” skills.  In keeping with the hands-on orientation of professional development that takes place throughout the curriculum, the Outdoor Leadership Council (OLC), a student group, has created a new fund to help students obtain all important professional certifications.

Zach Wigham ‘13, Vice President of the OLC, was one of the club members who organized a certification fund to support Unity students who are seeking certification opportunities.  The fund was the brainchild of Mike Froehly ‘13, the club founder and President.  The fund is being managed by a committee that includes Nicole Collins, Career Consultant / Internship Coordinator; Michele Leavitt, Adjunct Faculty Member and Interim Director of Development; Wigham; Froehly; Eliza Winter-Potter ’13, Treasurer; and Kelsey Tuttle ’13, Secretary.

“The majority of students at Unity are preparing to pursue careers in service to the natural world,” Wigham explained.  “Often the careers that are most appealing to our graduates require one or even a variety of certifications.  Our goal in this initiative is to help students financially to get a leg-up on their careers by gaining the certifications that enhance their career options.”

Any full-time Unity student is eligible for support.  The call for proposals is currently available with applications being accepted until October 22.

“Often alumni return to campus and advise current students on preparing for life after Unity,” noted Froehly.  “They frequently urge students to obtain certifications and training to enhance their academic credentials.  Being a Unity student is about preparing to make a difference as an environmental leader and educator.  Reaching that pinnacle requires the most comprehensive preparation possible.”
