B.S. IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

problem-based, solution-oriented

Flexible and affordable, the B.S. in Environmental Science offers students a new way to earn a degree from America’s Environmental College. Students can choose where and how to learn according to individual preferences and ultimate career goals.

B.S. in Environmental Science

The Environmental Science program at Unity College: Hybrid Learning is built around a sustainability framework that seeks to understand the interactions between natural and social systems. Students in the Environmental Science major will build knowledge and skills related to ecosystems, natural resources, human behavior, and social systems through a combination of active classroom and field experiences and case studies. They will have opportunities to analyze and evaluate solutions to current problems such as developing a sustainable regional food system, meeting growing needs for energy globally, and obtaining raw materials in ways that protect local ecosystems and respect indigenous cultures. The Environmental Science program will prepare students to work collaboratively with stakeholders to address environmental challenges in diverse settings.

Environmental Science Program Highlights

What Students Study

Many courses in the Environmental Science degree program integrate other disciplines for cross-study purposes, helping you to consider solutions to human-natural systems in your coursework. As a student in our program, you will gain the fine-tuned skills and knowledge to become an experienced environmental problem-solver.

Graduates who earn the B.S. in Environmental Science will be able to…

  • Draw on an understanding of matter cycles, ecosystem dynamics, and energy flow in the atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and hydrosphere to address environmental challenges.
  • Identify and describe how human activity contributes to environmental unsustainability by disrupting naturally occurring cycles.
  • Draw on psychological and sociological theories to explain and anticipate human behavior and decision-making and design interventions to promote pro-environmental behavior.
  • Critically evaluate, interpret, and use data from the natural sciences and social sciences to design and evaluate potential solutions to environmental problems.
  • Integrate knowledge of ecosystem processes, human behavior, and social systems to develop and defend solutions to environmental sustainability challenges in various contexts, such as business, government, and/or non-government organizations.

How Students Attend Classes

Students enrolled in the Hybrid Learning programs have the flexibility to design their own academic experiences in ways that best fit with their learning preferences, lifestyle, and career aspirations. Learners can enroll in online courses while roaming the world or dedicate their time to immersive and tactile learning in our residential communities, or anything in between.

  • As a Hybrid student, students choose – in-person, online, or both simultaneously.
  • From the moment they enroll, students are assigned a specialized Hybrid Learning Coach to provide them with individualized attention as they make their choices and blaze their learning path. A Hybrid Learning Coach will stay with them throughout their learning experience regardless of the modality or pace of their path.
  • As long as a student is enrolled in three credits during a term, they are considered full time.
  • Students can register for up to three terms at a time.
  • We also offer housing and dining options to fit their schedule.

Here are some examples of the learning pathways available within our majors. Most terms are five weeks long.
