HL 395 Backcountry Skills for Conservation Professionals

I am interested in learning more about Backcountry Skills for Conservation Professionals!

This course includes one week at a lodge in western Maine and one week paddling on the Penobscot River!

This course is designed for adventurous, wilderness-oriented students looking to gain skills and knowledge vital to remote wildlife and fisheries field work. In this 300-level course, students will practice a variety of survival and scientific skills essential for living and working safely in remote environments.

    • Earn Red Cross Wilderness First Aid Certification
    • Complete American Canoeing Association Level I curriculum
    • Substitutes for WF 320 Wildlife and Fisheries Techniques or CL 402 Law Enforcement Leadership or EVPC 401 Transformational Leadership

    Week 1 Monday May 15 Term begins online

    Week 2 Sunday May 21 Arrive at Sky Lodge in Jackman, Maine
    {Monday through Sunday May 22-28 Classes at Sky Lodge}

    Week 3 Monday May 29 Leave for Canoe Trip
    {Friday June 2 Return to Sky Lodge, Saturday June 3 Classes end at 5:00 pm}

    Week 4 Monday June 5 – Sunday June 11
    Course resumes online

    Week 5 Monday June 12 – Sunday June 18
    Course ends

  • Course Conditions
    • Portions of this course occur in a wilderness/backcountry setting and the schedule or itinerary may be adjusted, or the course cancelled due to weather, local conditions, safety, enrollment, or other factors in the discretion of Unity College.
    • In the event of course cancellation prior to the first day of the course, refunds will be made in accordance with the Unity College Hybrid Learning Course Catalog, the policies of which govern this course.
    • Travel expenditures are the sole responsibility of the student and will not be refunded in the event of course cancellation or change in itinerary. Unity College recommends the purchase of travel insurance or refundable tickets.
    • All students are required to purchase a room and board plan from Unity College (accommodations and meals) for the in-person portions of the course. Meals consist of three meals per day and accommodations (whether at Sky Lodge or in the field) are shared.
