By employing a valid and reliable sampling methodology, random samples drawn from an unknown population distribution can be used to determine approximate values for the population mean and standard deviation. In this application, the proposed population mean is known as the point estimate and the researcher will typically calculate a confidence interval around this point estimate based upon a predetermined level of confidence.
