SUBJECT: We are Unity: The Unity Commission on Community Standards & Inclusivity
Unity College Community,
In my November 9 note to campus, I encouraged us all to share our best selves with each other. Since then I’ve been working with the leadership team on several — some very small, some much larger – initiatives to help us do just that.
Over the next few days and weeks we will be rolling out initiatives to better articulate community expectations; to add to our capacity for community strengthening; to establish efficient and effective pathways for better communication; to create opportunities to continue to celebrate our differences and similarities; and to find ways to spend positive time together in numbers big and small.
The Unity Commission on Community Standards & Inclusivity
I am writing today to announce a new presidential initiative designed to provide Unity College students and community members with a natural, comfortable, and effective pathway to communicate and resolve concerns – big or small – with college problem-solvers. To that end, I am establishing a presidential commission.
The Unity Commission on Community Standards & Inclusivity (The Unity Commission) will be a cross-functional body of Unity College professionals whose sole charge is to hear college community concerns (Specific to Community Standards and Inclusivity), represent those matters to the Unity College President, ensure appropriate and timely resolution, maintain communication with the concerned party or parties, and provide information to the larger community as appropriate.
Initial membership will include Dean of Students Ray Finney (Chair); Athletics Coordinator Zsakiyah Brown; Director of the Outdoor Adventure Center, Jessica Steele; Chief of Staff, Dr. John Zavodny; and Dean of the School of Environmental Citizenship, Dr. Erika Latty. The President will serve ex officio.

The Unity Commission is meant to supplement, not disrupt, your normal avenues for communication. This is one more way of making sure that every voice is heard and every concern is taken seriously.
Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer
Among the most long-term impactful things we can do is to add to our capacity for community building. That is why, as of yesterday morning, I reopened the search for the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer. If we needed a reminder, it should now be more clear than ever that community matters, inclusivity matters, culture matters, and we matter. This is an investment in us and in Unity.
Friends, Unity takes time — time together, time listening, time celebrating, and the time of professionals. The leadership team is imagining ways to help. This is where we start.
