Data Analytics – Certificate

Data is the best weapon against climate change

With a renewed emphasis on combating global climate change, the data analytics field is expected to grow at a rate of 20% over the next decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Much of the climate change research and mitigation strategies rely on adequate and accurate data and data interpretation. Climate change is the biggest threat facing the planet for current and future generations. Climate change impacts everything from marine biology to food systems to human health. One of the most powerful tools in the fight against climate change is data. Data Analytics uses a variety of tools — from machine learning to data visualization — to present an accurate picture of the current health of the planet and predict the future.

In addition to the certificate program at the Technical Institute for Environmental Professions, we also offer a full Associate of Applied Science in Data Analytics. Both our Data Analytics programs are unique in Maine – delivered in a highly flexible (HyFlex) format, leveraging both live in-person and online options, from our brand-new high-tech classrooms in New Gloucester, Maine.

How you will learn

We at TIEP believe that we have taken all the best features of in-person learning and combined them with the best parts of online learning to create an innovative experience designed to meet the needs of a modern learner. Our brand new HyFlex classrooms are located at the Unity College campus on Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine. 100% of the courses taught at TIEP are leveraging the HyFlex model designed for busy learners. In a HyFlex class, all courses start with an “in-person” class where you decide if you are attending face-to-face or virtually. These live classes, supported with cutting-edge technology, enable learners to ask questions (live or in chat), participate in classroom discussions and group work, as well as participate in “hands-on” labs and projects. Flexibility doesn’t end there; our state-of-the-art video recording and curating technology means that even if you must miss class (life happens) you can log in on your time and see what you missed. If you are struggling to grasp a particular subject being discussed in class, simply go back on your own time and re-watch. After viewing the recording, questions may come up; for this our subject matter experts (or professors) are there to help you get answers through both virtual and in-person support hours.

What (competencies) you learn

One of our guiding principles is that knowledge is what learners gain from the materials presented in the course, but competency is the ability to apply that knowledge through a task in a simulated work setting. A competency is a way to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities. Below are a few of the many program competencies outlined within both the Data Analytics certificate and degree programs.

  • Articulate the connection between data and the environmental professions and the importance of data in the field
  • Demonstrate the ability to think critically in making decisions based on data and deep analytics
  • Demonstrate the ability to use data analysis tools such as Python, APIs, JSON, Numpy, MathPlotLib, Beautiful Soup, and more
  • Visualize data into graphics using packages such as Tableau
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate the result of the data analysis to relevant stakeholders
  • Organize and retrieve data using tools such as MongoDB, SQL, Postgre SQL
  • Create and manipulate web data using HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Leaflet, and more

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is this an online program?

Yes and no because it’s up to you. Classes are taught on a specific day and time like a traditional course, but students are free to attend in-person or online from wherever they are. Learners, who cannot attend a particular class in person because of work, childcare, or life can access the LIVE course they missed online once the class ends. Every course will have virtual “drop-in” times for learners to get help from a content expert. Often the content expert is the faculty member teaching the course.

  • How and where will I study?

Our classrooms are located at our brand-new building at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine, with classes happening in real-time (synchronous), either in person or online. Since all our courses are taught from campus you are attending a live class regardless of your location and will be able to ask questions, participate in discussions, engage with classmates, and experience learning in the labs.

  • How much does it cost?

Our cost per credit is $250, and we anticipate most learners being eligible to received Financial Aid (federal & state), which can reduce out-of-pocket costs significantly. Learn more about Paying for College.

  • How do I find out if I’m eligible for Financial Aid?

The process is simple, complete the FAFSA and make sure to include the Technical Institute for Environmental Professions at Unity College school code 006858. If you have questions about financial aid, paying for college, or the process, our staff is ready and eager to help.

  • When do classes start?

A start date has not been finalized yet as we continue to build programs and actively work towards an anticipated launch some time in late summer or early fall 2022.

  • What am I going to learn?

The skills neccessary to be prepared and career ready, when entering or progressing in your specific field of study.

  • How many hours a day do I need to spend in class and studying?

Learners on average spend 1-2 hours outside of the class reading, studying, or doing homework for every hour they spend in a course.

  • How do I apply?

The application will be launched as we get closer to an official start date. Until then you should fill out an inquiry form and we will keep you up to date on our progress towards an anticipated opening in late summer or early fall 2022.
