The FIT group has been hard at work over the past week! Below I’ve shared a summary of activities from DCI Cartier.
FIT provided feedback to the “onboarding” design team (led by Ray) that is developing programming to support students when the first arrive on campus. This programming will help students understand available resources (e.g., Wellness Center, Library), navigate and use the learning management system, develop connections with peers, staff, and faculty, and learn specific strategies for managing stress, etc. Early feedback to the “onboarding” design team centered around ideas to embed co-curricular programming within an academic context and focusing programming on the broader goal of getting learners ready to productively engage in the collaborative and challenging work of a learning expedition.
In Professional Development on Friday, faculty provided detailed feedback on the 12.3.18 draft of the F2Y Scope & Sequence.
Also as part of Professional Development on Friday, Beth Arnold and Will Hafford facilitated a session about how to assess students’ learning/mastery of skills and practices. They demonstrated how they use the unconscious competency model of learning to design and support students’ acquisition of skill mastery and make explicit connections to multiple expeditionary learning design principles (e.g., the primacy of self-discovery, the importance of success and failure). This learning model is well aligned with Grossman et al.’s Approximations of Practice framework, one of the underlying design frameworks for the F2Y program.
We are now using the front office in Constable Hall as F2Y idea and work space. We want to encourage all members of the Unity College community to stop by and share ideas and questions related to F2Y with us. (We have hot drinks and snacks – including chocolate!) As we solidify work schedules this term, we’ll have a better idea of exactly who will be available in the office on specific days, but to start, Jen will be available in the F2Y office every Tuesday (all day).
As always, if you have comments or feedback please reach out to President Khoury, CAO Latty, or myself.
