In a recent Environmental Issues and Insights course taught by Instructor James Merkel, students were asked to identify emerging leaders in the fields of climate change, environmental justice and food systems. Once the leaders were chosen, Merkel asked the students to create three-minute mini-documentaries on their leader of choice for presentation at the Unity College Student Conference, a twice-yearly opportunity to showcase student research and art.

One of the student documentaries profiled is the Executive Director of Maine Farmland Trust, John Piotti, who formerly served as the Majority Leader for the Maine State House of Representatives and was also a Unity College trustee.

Last May when the documentaries were presented, based on what they learned, attendees voted on which Maine leader they would most like to have come as a guest speaker to Unity College. Of the more than one dozen entries submitted, the documentary featuring John Piotti and Maine Farmland Trust was chosen, and an invitation to speak was offered to Piotti.

As part of the Lapping Lecture Series, on Monday, November 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, Piotti will offer a critical overview of the challenges and opportunities related to farming in Maine.

The Lapping Lecture Series was named for former interim Unity College president Mark Lapping in recognition for his service and significant contributions to the College.
