Unity College student Johan Fastberg ’17 Captive Wildlife Care and Education, was recently named player of the year in men’s soccer for the Yankee Small College Conference. He was also nominated to the USCAA Men’s Soccer All-American second team for his outstanding performance on the field.

Fastberg, a native of Sweden and an international student at the College, helped lead the Rams to an impressive 9-6 record, one of the team’s best in recent years. Fastberg scored a total of twelve goals during the season with one assist.

Fastberg was very surprised that he won the award and the nomination, saying that he was completely surprised.

“It is awesome that as a freshman I received the YSCC award and was nominated to the USCAA team, especially because I just moved to the United States a few months ago. I’m proud to represent Sweden and Unity College and that I received this recognition. It is a great honor,” Fastberg said.

Unity College’s Men’s Soccer Coach Jeremy Von Oesen believes that Fastberg has quickly become a crucial part of the team.

“There are a number of reasons Johan was a key player for us this season.  His individual skills, explosiveness, tenacious ‘no quit’ effort, positive attitude, and his team-oriented unselfish play made those around him better,” said Von Oesen.
