On Monday, May 13, research and artistic projects by Unity College students will be showcased at the annual end-of-semester Student Conference.
The conference will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts (UCCPA), 42 Depot Street, Unity, Maine. Awards will be presented in the main auditorium of the UCCPA at noon. The event is free and open to the general public.
The Unity College Student Conference is an opportunity to celebrate academic excellence. Projects presented will cover a wide array of topics, from scientific research gathered on invasive species to interpretive sculpture. Works are judged by College faculty, staff, and community partners.
“Our College community is supportive of the Student Conference,” noted Melora Norman, Director of the Dorothy Webb Quimby Library at Unity College and a conference organizer. “This is a chance for our entire community to celebrate the exceptional scholarship and achievements of Unity College students.”
Professor Amy Arnett, also a conference organizer, is looking forward to the conference. Three of her students will be giving a presentation that they gave at the Northeast Natural History Conference, held on April 14-15 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The fact that student work presented at a professional conference will also be showcased at Unity’s Student Conference demonstrates the level of sophistication involved, Arnett says.
“The Student Conference is a great way for us to celebrate the hard work and scholarship of our students,” noted Arnett.
Conference submissions are processed through a call for proposals that is forwarded to all Unity students and faculty during the semester. The Student Conference takes place between the end of classes and the beginning of final exams and consists of multiple presentation formats and includes judging in several interdisciplinary categories. The conference goals are:
- Encourage, promote, and recognize all quality academic and professional work among Unity College students, but celebrate excellence
- Help build a campus culture that values attention to detail and quality work
- Provide a transitional experience into professional and academic communities
- Facilitate program evaluation and community building
