Unity College President Stephen Mulkey, a scientist with significant research experience, will offer a Presentation on Global Climate Change at Unity College on Wednesday, October 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Room 204, Parsons Wing of the Student Activity Center.  The event is free and open to the general public.

Unity College is located at 90 Quaker Hill Road, Unity, Maine.

The presentation is part of an Environmental Sustainability class taught by Adjunct Instructor Anna Fiedler and Professor Mick Womersley. The topic will be Economics & Ethics of Climate Change.

Recently Mulkey stated his view that mitiating global climate change is a moral imperative.  Unity College is a signatory of theAmerican College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment.

“This is the game of the century and it is on,” Mulkey said.  “If we don’t address (global climate change) the consequences will be very serious for our children and grandchildren.  Many people who are middle aged now will notice changes that are very real and consequential.  We have to come up with solutions as a species.”

Mulkey has expressed a bold vision regarding Unity’s role in training students to hold the environmental jobs of the 21st Century, many of which will focus on mitigating global climate change.

“One of my visions for Unity College is that the concept of sustainability not just be about composting and putting Solar photovoltaic on the roof of the Presidents’ house and things like that,” Mulkey explained.  “It’s an entire mindset or metaphor for how we see ourselves and how we interact with the planet.  It includes a lot of science.”

The emerging field of Sustainability Science shapes the Unity College curriculum.

“Not only is Unity College one of the greenest college campuses ever, in terms of its practice of sustainability, but my vision is to integrate the science and studies of sustainability into the curriculum at all levels,” Mulkey said.
