On Tuesday, November 13th, Unity College President Stephen Mulkey will speak at the Glickman Library at the University of Southern Maine in Portland as part of the L.L. Bean/Lee Surace Colloquium Series. His topic “Crisis and Opportunity in the Environmental Century–Inspiring a Generation of Greatness,” coincides with his passion as well as his research and livelihood.  Mulkey’s presentation is available online.

President Mulkey is a well-respected environmental science researcher and university administrator, and worked with Unity College trustees and faculty in order to organize the College around sustainability science. In the process, he has attracted a lot of energy and focus, as well as an anonymous $10 million endowment gift.

Obtaining funding to support sustainability educational programs is not new to Dr. Mulkey. Just prior to his arrival at Unity College, as Principal Investigator at the University of Idaho, Dr. Mulkey received more than $1.2 million in grants from NASA and the National Science Foundation for curriculum developments centered around environmental science and climate change. Now Dr. Mulkey brings his energy to Unity College, where new excitement has infiltrated the air since he arrived.

Dr. Mulkey will present from 4:45 pm to approximately 5:30 pm in the Events Room located on the 7th floor of the Glickman Library. His address will be followed by complimentary refreshments provided by L.L. Bean. Later that same evening, Dr. Mulkey expects to share the stage with his friend and international climate change activist, Bill McKibben, at the State Theatre in downtown Portland. Mr. McKibben is the author of a July 2012 landmark Rolling Stone article, “Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math.”
