Teams from the University of Maine and Colby College joined Unity in representing the United States against teams from across Eastern Canada, such as Sir Sanford Fleming College of Peterbough, Ontario, MacDonald Campus of McGill University in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Quebec, and the Marine College of Forest Technology of Fredericton, New Brunswick.
The men’s A-Team, consisting of Blake Wilder, Ben Lisle, Matt Baird, Matthew Squires, Sean Monaghan, and Liam Mellaly, did very well, finishing fourth overall out of the fifteen teams. Blake Wilder won the accuracy cut, which was a new event this year, and Sean Monaghan was the fastest in the singles kettle boil. The team finished second in the crosscut sawing, and Blake Wilder and Ben Lisle chopped to a third place finish in the standing block. The B-team also was competitive with Maverick Eldridge coming in fifth in the chainsaw event and Matthew Cote and Sylvester Gervasio were sixth in quarter split. Other members of the team were Howard Asal, Connor Whelan, and Tyler Jepson.
There were thirteen women’s teams and the Unity women took eighth place overall. Monica Spanafore and Lauren Souther chopped their way to second place in quarter split and Mackenzie Smith was third in the accuracy cut. They also captured fifth place in several events: Natasha Kosowsky and Mackenzie Smith in standing block chop, Nicole Harmon and Taylor Briggs in underhand chop, and Monica Spanafore in an axe throw tie. The Unity College Woodsmen will next compete at the University of New Hampshire on November 1.
