Subject: In reflection of President Emeritus Karstetter

Unity College Community,

Now that the family has had some time, it is with mixed emotions that I reflect today in honor and gratitude on the life of Dr. Allan Karstetter, Unity College President Emeritus 1972-1978.

As we’ve worked with the Karstetter family since his recent passing, I’ve been more and more impressed with the rich life of this teacher, scholar, leader, and family man who clearly lived the kind of rich life that inspires others; but the historic significance of his achievements for Unity College are what is truly humbling.

In our first fifty years, enrollment and accreditation have proven to be the very life’s blood of Unity College. Dr. Karstetter’s successful bid for accreditation and increases in enrollment in the mid-seventies provided the foundation for future growth, stability, and excellence. When fifty more years are added to this young college’s history and future leaders, students, and partners look back they will undoubtedly see the success of the Karstetter administration as one of a few truly significant inflection points in our history.

Dr. Allan Karstetter will forever stand proudly in the Pantheon of Unity College leadership as President during a formative time in the college’s history. For his service to this institution we should all be grateful.

“Integrity, by its very existence, rekindles the belief that as a people we can live above the level of moral squalor. We need that belief; as a cynical community is a corrupt community.” John  Gardner
