Unity Environmental University Launches Innovative In-Person Programming at Pineland Farms

Students studying in Freeport Hall, September 2024

Unity Environmental University has successfully launched its groundbreaking in-person educational programming at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester. This initiative represents a new frontier in higher education, as Unity leverages world-class facilities through a unique partnership with the Libra Foundation. This approach allows Unity to provide students with exceptional facilities and learning experiences at a significantly lower cost than traditional campus-based universities.

“We are thrilled to expand our offerings and provide students with the opportunity to experience the unique learning environment that Pineland Farms has to offer,” said Dr. Melik Peter Khoury, President of Unity Environmental University. “In the past, Universities mostly operated like a small town, providing their own dining facilities, medical facilities, etc., but we said – what if instead of duplicating all of these services, we operated within a town’s established economy, which is a totally different way of thinking about higher education.”

“By partnering with Unity Environmental University, Pineland Farms is truly a vibrant economic hub with a dynamic, innovative university at its center. It is precisely the kind of economic transformation we hoped would come from Libra Foundation’s redevelopment of Pineland,” said Libra Foundation Executive Vice President, Erik Hayward.

To enhance the student experience, Unity has partnered with Black Tie Catering and the Pineland Market to provide students with flexible meal plans and discounts. Additionally, the University has collaborated with the University of Southern Maine to offer residence hall and programming accommodations for students who want that experience.

“The collaboration with Unity Environmental University helps and benefits both of our institutions,” said Christopher Broere, USM’s Assistant Director of Housing Operations. “It helps deepen the ties the University of Southern Maine has amongst our fellow universities.”

This flexible approach to higher education aligns with Unity’s commitment to sustainability and accessibility and is made possible in-part thanks to the University’s significant growth in online learning. Unity Distance Education welcomed its largest incoming class ever this fall, and now serves over 9,100 students.
