May 2021 Commencement

March 4, 2021

As we continue to navigate an unprecedented time, I understand that early communication is crucial with regard to our intention for the May 2021 commencement ceremony. Commencement is an important time of celebration for you, your loved ones, and all of us who work to support you throughout your time at Unity College and beyond. After much deliberation, Unity College has made the decision to offer a virtual commencement ceremony for May 2021 in lieu of an in-person ceremony.

This difficult decision is shared with strong consideration given to the current state of COVID-19, the restrictions around large gatherings and travel for those coming from out of state, the increased number of students and guests who would be included as a result of the last two commencement ceremonies being held virtually, and the safety of our students, their families, and Unity College employees. The State of Maine currently requires all travelers coming from outside of Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire to receive a negative COVID-19 test or quarantine upon their arrival. Further, the State of Maine currently limits the number of persons for outdoor gatherings to 5 people per 1,000 sq. ft. of occupiable outdoor space or not more than 100 persons whichever is less. With these restrictions, and considering our physical capacity, we could not offer a safe in-person commencement experience that would allow you and your loved ones to attend.

Graduation day is without a doubt one of the most exciting days of your life, and for those closest to you. It is a day that deserves to be celebrated, as countless hours of work and overcoming obstacles culminate in the acknowledgment of this valuable achievement. It is also a day that often marks the beginning of a new chapter, as you embark on the next phase of your life, going on to do important and fulfilling work.

While the May 2021 commencement ceremony will be our third virtual commencement, we continue to find new ways to improve upon this experience, including the addition of a notable commencement speaker. Danni Washington is thrilled to be your commencement speaker this year. Ms. Washington is the host of TV’s Xploration Nature Knows Best and co-founder of Big Blue & You. Ms. Washington has a passion for science, keeping our oceans clean, and encouraging future generations to pursue science and sustainability.

Students who applied for May 2021 graduation will receive a follow-up email outlining the details of the commencement ceremony and how they can participate to make the most of this experience. Graduating students will receive their regalia and will have the opportunity to submit a photo to be used during the virtual ceremony.  In the meantime, please reach out to your Advisor or Hybrid Learning Coach with any questions.

Commencement is always the highlight of our year, as it evokes an incredible sense of pride and excitement. We know that, in that moment, you are moving on to the next chapter of your life and we cannot wait to see what you go on to do! We look forward to making this important moment of celebration meaningful for you and your loved ones.

With Pride,

Dr. Melik Peter Khoury
President, Unity College
