The Stories That Filled the Gaps Formal Training Couldn’t

I learned to lead in the dark. Not in conference rooms with whiteboards and action items. Not from books with step-by-step frameworks. I learned in the moments after everything fell apart; when the plan died, when trusted people walked away, when I realized the safety net was just another story we tell ourselves.

Most leadership education is a lie. It pretends there’s a playbook. It sells you the myth that if you just follow the right principles, make the right decisions, and communicate clearly enough, people will follow. But real leadership lives in the spaces between the rules, in the moments when the script runs out and everyone’s staring at you anyway.

That’s why I turned to stories. Not because I was looking for entertainment, but because I was desperate for truth. I needed to see what leadership actually looked like when stripped of the corporate theater, when the stakes were real and the consequences mattered.
