TOUR 101 Tourism as an Integrated System

TOUR101

Description

Tourism destinations are systems within broader systems. This course will introduce students to the key components contained within tourism destinations (e.g., attractions, hospitalityservices, residents, natural resources, and networks of connectivity) and examine the cross-sectoral nature of tourism and hospitality as industries that rely on food services, transportation, telecommunications and technology, health and support services. Students will apply their understanding of tourism systems to evaluate sources of destination vulnerability and resilience, especially in the context of environmental, social, and economic changes. Case studies will illustrate the breadth of destination types (focusing on regenerative and sustainable tourism destinations) that navigate a range of shocks and stressors, such as climate change, pandemics, and socio-demographic shifts.
