Moose River, Maine

Sky Lodge, an ecotourism destination situated on more than 150 acres in northern Maine, was gifted to Unity College in 2018. Built in 1929 as a hunting and fishing getaway and renamed “Sky Lodge” by two former WWII airmen in the 1940s, the main lodge has been lovingly restored over the past decade to its original state. Sky Lodge provides a unique opportunity for Unity College to demonstrate sustainable ecotourism. Through educational programming and entrepreneurship, Sky Lodge is an important element of both the Unity College curriculum and the local economy. Amenities include a conference center, contemporary cabins for rental, a swimming pool, an antique auto museum, a model railroad museum, and hiking trails. Outdoor activities nearby include hiking, golfing, biking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, whitewater rafting, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling.

The McKay Farm and Research station is a multi-faceted greenhouse operation. The facility serves as a direct extension of the 225-acre campus in Unity, providing multiple audiences with both educational and entrepreneurial opportunities. The donation in 2013 has helped the College develop and model replicable solutions for environmental challenges, in addition to creating a marketplace presence to serve the community. Students learn invaluable business management and administrative skills necessary to operate a successful agricultural business. McKay Farm and Research Station is open to the public – visit us to buy supplies and produce, meet local farmers, or rent some space in our greenhouses.

Portland, Maine

For years, Unity College has considered a Portland, Maine, presence as a natural expression of the vision, mission, and values of America’s Environmental College. A vibrant center for sustainability education, professional training, and outreach would expand brand awareness, foster corporate and individual relationships, and reach new markets in service to Unity College’s environmental and educational mission. A unique opportunity emerged in the shape of the former Baxter Academy of Science and Technology building at 54 York Street. The 54 York St. property offers Unity College a powerful way to engage the Portland peninsula through a historical reclamation project in a high visibility/ high traffic waterfront district. As the project unfolds, our objectives will include:

  • Be a living learning laboratory for urban ecology through immersive learning technology.
  • Increase brand awareness of Unity College in Portland and beyond.
  • Provide a base of operations for Unity College to better access Portland donors, partners, workforce, students, and travel.
  • Open new markets for Unity College revenue-generating programs, products, and venues.
  • Be a good neighbor in the historic waterfront district by being a resilience hub.
