In June 2025, Dr. Melik Peter Khoury, President and CEO of Unity Environmental University, was named the inaugural Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Maine Graduate School of Business. The award was established to recognize alumni who exemplify visionary leadership, measurable innovation, and meaningful contributions to their field. Dr. Khoury was selected for his decades of transformative work in higher education and for building a nationally recognized model of accessible, mission-driven learning in the environmental sciences.
Announcing the honor, Andrew D. King, Director of the MaineMBA at Maine Business School & Graduate School of Business called Dr. Khoury “a true Maine success story,” noting that “this award isn’t just about personal success; it honors an alum who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, service to community, and built cross‑disciplinary bridges leading to systemic change.” King added that Dr. Khoury’s record “exemplifies our values of excellence and social impact, inspiring current and future students as well as thousands of alumni peers.”
Since joining Unity in 2012, and assuming the presidency in 2016, Dr. Khoury has led a visionary reimagining of the university’s structure, strategy, and mission. He spearheaded the launch of Unity’s Distance Education division, established year-round academic calendars, implemented transparent and reset tuition models, and introduced programs designed specifically for working adults and place-bound students. He has also overseen Unity’s integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure to create personalized learning experiences for a growing population of learners across the country and around the world. These efforts have positioned Unity as a leader in education innovation, particularly in sustainability, conservation, climate science, and other environment-focused disciplines.
Dr. Khoury’s influence extends beyond Unity. He is widely recognized as an expert in institutional transformation, having served in leadership roles across multiple states including Maine, New York, Missouri, and Iowa before joining Unity. His work in governance reform, enrollment strategy, and operational restructuring earned national recognition in 2018 when he received the AGB John W. Nason Award for Board Leadership, one of the most prestigious honors in higher education governance.
Since 2016, Unity Environmental University has emerged as one of the fastest-growing universities in the nation with its enrollment increasing tenfold. Born and raised in West Africa, Dr. Khoury is a first-generation college graduate. He earned his B.S. in Business Management from the University of Maine, Fort Kent in 1999, followed by an MBA from the University of Maine in 2001, and a Doctor of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 2011. In 2025, he returned to the University of Maine as a nationally
celebrated leader, recognized for turning bold ideas into tangible solutions for change. That same year, Dr. Khoury was also invited to speak at the Salesforce’s Education Summit, where he shared Unity’s innovative approach to AI and digital tools designed to better support students and broaden access to environmental education throughout every stage of the learner’s relationship with the university.
The Distinguished Alumnus Award acknowledges not only Dr. Khoury’s accomplishments, but the measurable outcomes of his leadership: a more agile, inclusive, and forward-looking university that meets the needs of today’s learners and tomorrow’s workforce where they are in life and the world. His work continues to position Unity Environmental University as a national model for purpose-driven education.
