Unity College Community,

It’s been a big week for Unity College faculty, staff, and students.

First, last night was Big Night, an annual awareness-raising of the beginning of amphibian migration to breeding pools across New England. The Unity edition was organized by our own Herpetology Club, led by soon-to-be-alum Greg LeClair and Dr. Matt Chatfield. Watch Bill Green’s Maine in coming days and you might catch some footage of the event and our organizers.

We’ve also gotten notice this week that Unity College will be generously represented at the upcoming Maine Campus Compact Awards. In case you don’t know, Maine Campus Compact is a coalition of 18 member campuses whose purpose is to catalyze and lead a movement to reinvigorate the public purposes and civic mission of higher education.

Conservation Law Enforcement Club: The Unity College Conservation Law Enforcement Club will receive a President’s Campus Leadership Award from Maine Campus Compact. The President’s Campus Leadership Award honors organizations or departments that use service as an integral part of the college experience for students; utilize innovative approaches to enhancing campus-based efforts to address community issues and needs; sustain their work by developing strategies to integrate into the institution’s structure; have a deep, widespread impact on the campus; and have a deep, widespread impact on the community. This is meaningful recognition, not only for our Con Law club, but for our Student Government, club system, and for faculty sponsors and Student Success team that support them.

Dr. Chatfield: Each year Maine Campus Compact recognizes just three faculty members in Maine who have made public service an integral part of their teaching with the Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service-Learning Excellence. Recipients use service-learning and/or community action as an innovative teaching tool to engage students in civic learning. Recipients also show clear evidence of reflection, community benefit and reciprocity with community partners and demonstrate a commitment to advocating for service-learning and/or community action on campus and beyond. Unity College faculty member, Dr. Matthew Chatfield, will be presented with this year’s Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service-Learning Excellence.

Both awards will be presented at the Maine Campus Compact 17th Annual Awards Celebration on Wednesday, April 25th. As one of the board of directors with the Maine Campus Compact, I could not be more proud of the strong Unity College showing.

I couldn’t wait to share the good news, but keep an eye out for upcoming press releases for each of these honors.

Congratulations all around on a big week for Unity College.

In Unity,
MPK
Dr. Melik Peter Khoury
