Unity Environmental University Completes $1.2 Million Infrastructure Upgrade and Renovations at Historic Sky Lodge

Unity Environmental University is proud to announce the completion of an ambitious $1.2 million infrastructure enhancement plan for its historic Sky Lodge property in the Jackman and Moose River Valley region. This initiative underscores our commitment to the sustainability and long-term viability of this iconic property.

Comprehensive Renovations for Sustainability and Preservation

The University undertook this project in order to preserve the heritage and enhance the functionality of Sky Lodge following insights from commercial building inspectors and engineers. These upgrades span from essential infrastructure to aesthetic improvements, ensuring both the preservation of historical charm and the enhancement of modern functionality.

Enhancements at the Historic Lodge

The heart of the project focuses on the Historic Lodge, where improvements include:

  • Attic insulation and boiler replacement for energy efficiency.
  • Comprehensive electrical systems overhaul, emphasizing safety and modernization.
  • Fire safety enhancements, including hard-wired alarms and CO systems.
  • New window installation for enhanced energy efficiency and improved guest comfort.
  • Bathroom, kitchen, and heating system upgrades to elevate guest comfort.
  • Structural and cosmetic repairs to maintain the lodge’s historic integrity.
  • Moose River Valley Center renovation and Other Building Improvements

The Moose River Valley Center saw the installation of a Hyflex Classroom and interior refurbishments and a second classroom will also be installed. Additional building improvements include heating monitor installations, additional electrical improvements, comprehensive repairs to Sky Lodge Cabins and the Country House, as well as various aesthetic and structural upgrades across the property.

Enhancing Outdoor Spaces and Other Investments

Our outdoor spaces will also be revitalized, with improvements to the classroom pavilion area, deck repairs, and extensive landscaping. Key investments include plumbing and septic upgrades, new utility vehicles for maintenance, and enhanced snow removal capabilities.

Future Reopening

A planned reopening of Sky Lodge is scheduled for late Fall of 2024. However, dedicated space for senior center activities remains operational.

A Legacy for Future Generations

This significant investment not only enriches the educational experiences of our students but also secures the legacy of Sky Lodge for future generations. “Unity Environmental University is dedicated to preserving the heritage and enhancing the functionality of our beloved Sky Lodge. These extensive upgrades represent not only our commitment to sustainability but also our investment in the future of this historic property. By modernizing its infrastructure while honoring its storied past, we are ensuring that Sky Lodge remains a cherished destination for generations to come,” said President Melik Peter Khoury.

“We are thrilled to see Unity Environmental University investing in the preservation and enhancement of Sky Lodge. Our vision for this property has always been to provide a space for education, community, and appreciation of nature. With these renovations, we are confident that the property will continue to serve as a beautiful and inspiring place for future generations to learn and grow,” said Sky Lodge Donors, Elaine and John Couri.

Sky Lodge Highlights from 2023-2024

On April 8, 2024, Sky Lodge was in the path of totality for the Great American Eclipse. The fully booked event was attended by Unity students, employees, and the public, offering a once-in-a-lifetime educational experience.

In October 2023, 20 students participated in an intensive EMT training course at Sky Lodge, which included hands-on drills and a highlight helicopter rescue training.

The lodge hosted the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony for Forest Hills Consolidated School and provided space for local seniors to engage in social activities and crafts at the Elaine and John Couri Welcome Center.
