Dr. Erika Latty

President of the UC Enterprise, CAO, ALO 

Executive Biography

President of the UC Enterprise, CAO, and ALO, Dr. Erika Latty, provides first-among-equals leadership and oversight of faculty, curriculum, policy, and delivery of academic programs.

Dr. Erika Latty, Professor of Botany, is a forest ecologist who specializes in the effects of introduced tree disease on forest structure. She holds a Phd in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University and a B.A. in Biology from Harvard University. Erika served in her previous role as Dean of the School of Environmental Citizenship from July of 2016 until her appointment as Chief Academic Officer in April of 2017. Prior to serving as Dean, Erika was a Unity College center director and faculty leader.

Before coming to Unity College in 2007, Dr. Latty was Chair of the Environmental Studies Program and Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at Hollins University in Roanoke, VA. Prior to that she was a Research Associate at University Wisconsin-Madison.


Position Summary


The Chief Learning Officer (CLO) holds faculty rank and the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) designation for the College, and attends and votes at meetings of the faculties. The CLO leads efforts related to policy, assessment and compliance across the institution. The CLO is an executive position providing strategic leadership and management. The CLO partners with the President and other Enterprise officers to provide visionary leadership to Unity College as the College delivers curricular innovation to promote relevance and value to our external and internal audiences to ensure environmental and institutional sustainability. The CLO will provide leadership focused on developing and amplifying an integrative model of sustainability science education that seeks to unite the work of academics and student success to provide a coherent student experience. As the institution’s CLO and, in collaboration with senior leadership, provides strategic direction, resource prioritization, and policy formation for the College and its Sustainable Education Business Units (SEBUs). Leads transformation in the Unity College brand of higher education through innovations that empower graduates to solve the environmental challenges of the 21st century by providing distinctive programming that prepares students for a broad spectrum of current and emerging careers. Works collaboratively with key external intellectual and economic stakeholders in New England and beyond to forge partnerships and leverage resources to create and share experiential and innovative programming to serve our students by matching audience needs with relevant modalities and learning outcomes.


Essential Functions


    1. 1. Responsible for academic and related unit leadership of the College across the Enterprise, including all Sustainable Educational Business Units (SEBUs).1.     1. 2. Directly responsible to the President, and in concert with the faculty and other academic administrators, for the quality of the academic program.
    1. 3. Ensures the effectiveness of the curriculum through a robust system of assessment of student learning that is aligned with mission-driven programmatic and institutional learning goals and refined through a system of analysis and evaluation.
    1. 4. Develops and executes integrated institutional research and administrative operations plans that advance the institution’s strategic plan and mission, supports attainment of revenue goals, differentiates Unity College, and increases its national exposure.
    1. 5. Serves as the Accreditation Liaison Officer and is responsible for maintaining accreditation of Unity College.
    1. 6. Works with the President to steward the Unity College Mission and establish enterprise-wide vision and strategic direction.
    1. 7. Identifies new educational and business opportunities and assigns to Sustainable Educational Business Units (SEBUs) for development (or develop new SEBUs).
    1. 8. Establishes appropriate measures of success for individual SEBUs.
    1. 9. Provides centralized planning and policies for enterprise-wide functions.
    1. 10. Manages internal/external controls over decentralized functions.
    1. 11. Provides centralized operational services where appropriate.
    1. 12. Provides coordination and ensures strategic alignment of all SEBUs for decentralized functions. 
    1. 13. Manage, formulate, and execute College policies and procedures.
    1. 14. Oversee the responsible planning, stewardship, management, and accountability of the fiscal, capital and human resources of Academics and Student Success.
    1. 15. Provides strategic direction for academics to generate and incubate transformative contributions to the renewal of higher education, sustaining a collaborative intellectual environment that allows innovative thought-leadership in teaching and learning, educational research, public engagement, organizational efficiency, and community integration.
    1. 16. Lead student engagement and academic success by working with SEBU Vice President’s and has ultimate responsibility of compliance, assessment, and policy to ensure the institution is providing quality student support from the registrar, collaborative learning center, residential life, and student health services.
    1. 17. Ensure vigorous co-curricular activities, including student life, athletics and clubs.
    1. 18. In concert with the SEBU Vice Presidents, ensure a robust system of faculty evaluation is maintained to make recommendations to the President regarding promotion and retention of faculty in the Enterprise and all SEBUs.
    1. 19. Uphold the College’s commitment to, leadership in, and support of the advancement of sustainability science.
    1. 20. Advance the values of diversity and inclusion, particularly in support of a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
    1. 21. Assume responsibility to develop and maintain professional knowledge and skills of faculty and academic staff with regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws.
    1. 22. Facilitate, nurture, coordinate, and support efforts of the administration, students, faculty, and staff to advance the mission of the college.
    1. 23. Increase strategic generation of mission driven resources relating to the academic program and seize opportunities to commercialize innovations.
    1. 24. Facilitates and endorses direct access between the President and their direct reports to include responding to specific requests from the President.
    1. 25. Represent academic programming to the College, community, region, and public and private sectors.
