The Value of Internships at Unity College

April 27, 2021

As we move quickly into May, I wonder if you might recall what you were thinking about around this time during your Sophomore or Junior year at Unity College?  Warmer weather is on its way meaning more time outdoors and more sunshine, however there is another reason why this is an important time of year for many Unity College students. That’s right, it’s internship season!

While our new academic calendar encourages students to pursue internship and job opportunities throughout the year, many of our students are interested in summer internships as well. You might remember the excitement of searching for an internship and going through the interview process, much like applying for a job. The excitement of hearing back from different organizations and deciding where you might spend your summer. Many of our students are about to go through this process and I wanted to take this week’s letter to discuss how you might be able to support current students in their efforts.

Internships are an important part of the Unity College experience for many of our students. As those of you who completed an internship know, they often lead to wonderful professional connections and experiences that help you decide what kind of career you want to pursue. It’s truly an exciting time for our students!

With that in mind, I would like to highlight a few of the ways in which you can support students through this process:

Can you use an intern at your business or organization?
You already know what a Unity College intern brings to the table. You can bring in current students with confidence, knowing that they will be an asset to your team. If your organization already posts for internships, please let us know! If you think you could use an intern, but you’re not sure where to start, our Career Services Office is happy to help you determine your needs and how our students can help.

Can you connect us with your network?
It’s who you know, right? Professional networks are key to career development at all stages, and internships are no different. If you know someone in your network who could use a Unity College intern at their organization, please send us their contact information or have them reach out to our Career Services Office.

Are you able to offer support for students?
Many students struggle with the costs associated with their dream internship, often related to travel, food, and housing expenses. By giving a gift in any amount to the Student Internship Endowment fund, you’re helping us get closer to our first goal of $30,000. Once we reach that initial goal—and we’re already about half way there—we will be able to offer $1,500 scholarships to ten students to support their internship. The more we raise, the more students we can assist!

Thank you for supporting internships for Unity College students! The Career Services Office is always available to support alumni looking for job search and application assistance as well. You are welcome to Schedule an Appointment or email Career Services directly at career-services@unity.edu

As always, please contact us at development@unity.edu, with any questions or comments you may have.

With Pride,
