Alumnus Spotlight: Marc Goldberg ’94 Releases Inspiring Book “An Arborist Point of View from Under the Canopy”

We are excited to highlight Marc Goldberg, a proud Unity Environmental University alumnus from the Class of 1994, who has recently published the book, “An Arborist Point of View from Under the Canopy.”

Originally from Mansfield, Massachusetts, Marc grew up exploring the woods near his suburban home. Witnessing the rapid development and loss of these natural spaces sparked his desire to immerse himself in nature. “I wanted to get into the woods, and if you want woods, you go to Maine,” Marc recalls. This passion led him to what was then Unity College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences with a minor in Conservation Law Enforcement. During his time at Unity, he played and later coached soccer, and found the college to be his compass for life’s journey.

After graduation, Marc embarked on a diverse career path—working as a seasonal park ranger, coaching soccer, and engaging in landscaping. A pivotal moment came when a friend suggested he become an arborist. “It was mind-blowing,” Marc says. “I loved trees, and the idea of working with them professionally sounded wonderful.”

In 1999, Marc moved to San Diego, California, where he became a certified arborist and worked with several tree care companies. His deep connection to trees and the environment eventually inspired him to compile 40 years’ worth of personal writings, reflections, and quotes into his book, “An Arborist Point of View from Under the Canopy,” released in late September.

“An Arborist Point of View from Under the Canopy” is more than a book about trees; it’s a modern coffee table book that delves into themes of nature, time, love, and personal growth. Marc hopes readers will take away a sense of authenticity and a reminder to treat people and the environment with kindness and respect. “We’re all connected,” he emphasizes. “It’s about being real, being true to yourself and others, and recognizing the impact we have on the world.”

Marc also shared his thoughts on Unity’s evolution over the years. While he felt a sense of nostalgia and sadness about changes to the university’s traditional structure, after speaking with Unity President Melik Khoury, he expressed optimism about its future. “I was the reluctant alum that was concerned about Unity and its changes. What I realize now is that Unity’s Forest is healthier and only growing … It’s exciting to watch Unity reach national status,” he says. “The college was my compass, and it’s good to see it continuing to guide new generations, even if it looks different now.”

“Connecting with Marc reminded me of the profound impact Unity has on its students,” President Khoury said. “Alumni like him exemplify our mission of environmental responsibility and lifelong learning. We are incredibly proud of the important work he and others are doing to make a positive impact on our planet. With our new model providing more access, flexibility, and affordability than ever before, we’re confident that we’ll have even more alumni like Marc in the future.”

We congratulate Marc on his achievements and encourage you to explore “An Arborist Point of View from Under the Canopy.” His journey exemplifies the spirit of Unity Environmental University — passion for the environment, dedication to personal growth, and making a positive impact on the world.
