Robin B.
"Seeing how rapid climate change and rising ocean temperatures are directly threatening these delicate ecosystems made me want to highlight not just the crisis, but the active conservation and restoration efforts being done to protect them."
A personal project about coral reef degradation and restoration became an opportunity for Robin B. to bring marine science into her community and inspire a conversation about how local students can learn to protect the oceans.
Learning about marine biology has given Robin more than an understanding of ocean ecosystems. It has also helped her find ways to make complex scientific topics accessible to the people around her.
As part of a personal project, Robin created a news article about coral reef degradation and restoration. The subject was deliberate and personal.
“I chose to focus on coral reefs because they are often called the ‘rainforests of the sea’ and serve as a vital indicator of overall ocean health,” she says. “Seeing how rapid climate change and rising ocean temperatures are directly threatening these delicate ecosystems made me want to highlight not just the crisis, but the active conservation and restoration efforts being done to protect them.”
Translating that science for a general audience wasn’t straightforward. Robin had to learn how to take dense ecological concepts and reshape them into stories that everyday people could connect with and care about.
“This experience taught me how crucial science communication is for bridging the gap between researchers and the public,” she says. “I learned how to break down complex ecological concepts into engaging stories that everyday people can care about, which really strengthened my writing and advocacy skills.”
That skill, she says, is something Unity helped build.
“Unity has taught me to communicate complex scientific terms to a wide range audience.”
The project soon reached an audience far beyond the classroom. Robin’s article was published online and featured in her local newspaper, giving community members a direct window into coral reef science and what individuals can do to help protect these ecosystems.
Then something unexpected happened.
A local council member shared the article with the mayor’s office, pointing out the connection between community environmental awareness and youth education. That conversation made its way into a city meeting, where the mayor began discussing the possibility of expanding local youth summer programs to include hands-on marine and nature education.
A local reporter who covers environmental issues saw the piece circulating on social media and reached out to Robin directly. That conversation became a full feature story in the local newspaper, centering her research and her perspective as an environmental student.
A single article had become a community conversation.
If the proposed summer program moves forward, local students will have the opportunity to explore marine ecosystems firsthand and learn what they can do to protect them. It is a reminder that knowledge doesn’t have to stay inside a classroom or a course assignment. In the right hands, it can spark something much larger.
Robin’s experience is a clear example of what it looks like to put an environmental education into action. She took what she was learning, communicated it in a way her community could understand, and helped open a door that may give the next generation of students their first real connection to the natural world.
Her message to anyone considering taking that first step is hard to misread.
“DO IT!!! Do not over think this. Don’t let the negative thoughts get to you. DO IT!!!!! You will thank me later.”
A single project can become a conversation. A conversation can inspire new opportunities. And sharing what you learn can help bring environmental awareness into the community.
At Unity Environmental University, education connects learning with real-world experiences. Whether you’re studying marine biology, conservation, or another environmental field, what you learn can become a tool for making an impact in your community.
