Projects Designed to Support Your Work
Capstone projects at Unity focus on real challenges and real outcomes. Through our Master of Professional Studies degree programs, students work directly with organizations on projects built to meet active needs and produce practical deliverables.
Across roughly four months, students collaborate with employer partners to achieve clearly defined goals, scoped projects, and meaningful results.

Each capstone project should align with the student’s area of study and address a real-world environmental or sustainability challenge identified by the collaborating organization.
Projects should have achievable goals within the student’s academic term, and both the proposal and implementation plan are developed collaboratively between the student and the organization.
The level of involvement varies by project, but successful collaborations typically include:
- A designated point of contact who can communicate regularly with the student.
- Timely responses to questions and feedback requests.
- Sharing relevant background materials, data, or context as needed.
- Participation in key project milestones or check-ins to help guide progress.
Your engagement and insights are essential to helping the student produce meaningful, actionable results.
Capstone projects run throughout the year, with five 8-week terms annually.
Students first take Capstone I, where they design the project proposal in collaboration with their partner organization, followed by Capstone II, where they carry out the project and deliver the final outcomes.
Students receive ongoing guidance from their faculty mentors and Unity’s graduate academic support team.
They are expected to maintain consistent communication with both their faculty and their collaborator to ensure that the project stays aligned with organizational goals and academic expectations.
Once a project is confirmed, collaborators complete a brief, non-binding agreement outlining roles and expectations.
At the project’s conclusion, we’ll also ask for your feedback through a short survey to help us continually improve the capstone experience.
Absolutely. The project scope, outcomes, and deliverables are developed in partnership between you and the student, with faculty input as needed.
Our goal is to ensure the project provides value to your organization while meeting the student’s academic learning objectives.
Collaborating organizations have supported a wide variety of projects, including:
- Needs assessments and program evaluations
- Sustainability or climate action plans
- Educational or training materials
- Outreach or communication products
- Research reviews and toolkits
Each project is customized to meet the organization’s specific goals and priorities.
Unity students and faculty understand the importance of protecting confidential information.
If your project involves sensitive materials, please identify them clearly. We can work together to establish additional confidentiality expectations as needed.
