Mathematics is a vital tool in professional work across fields like science, technology, business, and the arts. In the Math Hub, you’ll find a collection of tools, tutorials, and guides covering everything from graphing data to tackling statistical operations. Whether you’re advancing in a math course or integrating math into other subjects, the Math Hub is here to help you succeed.

Surviving An Online Math Course

The purpose of this Math Hub is to provide supplemental resources to help you succeed in your Unity Environmental University mathematics courses. It also serves as a resource to support your work in other courses that require applied mathematics. The resources in this hub are always accessible, regardless of your math course enrollment. This section offers resources and suggested strategies to help you thrive in your online mathematics course.

Data Storytelling

Data storytelling refers to the process of transforming raw data into compelling stories by revealing patterns, trends, and insights that might otherwise go unnoticed. Through charts, graphs, and maps, data becomes accessible and engaging, allowing viewers to quickly grasp complex information. Visual storytelling can highlight disparities, illustrate changes over time, and predict future outcomes, making it a powerful tool for decision-making. Understanding the nature of data, types of data, and appropriate ways to visualize data enables a deeper understanding of the narrative behind the numbers fostering data-driven insights.

Data Exploration

Before making data-driven decisions, you must understand your data. Descriptive statistics offer a foundational lens through which to examine data characteristics. By calculating measures of central tendency, dispersion, and shape, we gain valuable insights into data distribution, identify potential outliers, and uncover preliminary patterns. This initial exploration lays the groundwork for informed decision-making and effective data modeling. The tools in this section will help you explore your data set via mathematical and graphical means.

Understanding Populations Through Sampling

Understanding the characteristics of a large group, or population, can be challenging. Gathering data from every individual is often impractical, if not impossible. This is where sampling proves invaluable. By carefully selecting a smaller subset, or sample, we can gain insights into the entire population. This process is fundamental to fields like environmental science, sociology, and market research. In this section, you will learn about sampling techniques and how standardized distributions help us make sense of the data we collect.

Data-Driven Decision Making

When it comes to making data-driven decisions, hypothesis testing is your compass. This powerful statistical tool allows you to transform raw data into meaningful insights. Hypothesis testing involves the formulation of competing claims about a population parameter (like the mean or proportion) and the use of sample data to decide which claim is more likely to be true. In this section, you can explore the process of hypothesis testing, learn how to set up hypotheses, analyze data, and interpret the results.  You will learn that there are different kinds of hypothesis tests depending upon various parameters including the nature of the sample data. These resources will equip you with the tools you need to critically evaluate information and make data-driven decisions.

Algebra Refresh

This resource serves as a foundational stepping stone for your data analytics journey. You will revisit and strengthen essential algebraic concepts to ensure a solid base for solving problems. The focus will be on sharpening your skills in basic operations, manipulating linear equations with confidence, and understanding how to solve systems of linear equations. You will also review fundamental concepts related to functions, exploring how they model real-world relationships and lay the groundwork for advanced algebraic studies. By reviewing these materials, you will have a renewed mastery of these core algebraic tools.
