History and Evolution
The History of Unity Environmental University
Unity Environmental University is a multi-faceted educational institution, fully accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), and recognized as a Master’s College & University by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Unity empowers learners online, in-person in Maine, and on-location in the workplace and the field. We have evolved over 60 years from a small, private, liberal arts college to a national leader in sustainability education, offering associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees as well as micro-credentials, non-credit learning opportunities, and a variety of mission-aligned services.
Our Founding
Our roots go back to 1965 when the Unity Institute of Liberal Arts and Sciences was founded to serve a student body of 39 students which was supported by a small employee base. The founders, a group of local business people, were looking for ways to counter economic decline in the town of Unity, Maine. Shortly afterward, the Institute became Unity College and in 1969 we awarded our first baccalaureate degrees to a graduating class of 24 students.
Our Evolution
In 2015, Unity proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary with a student body of 643 students. As of 2024, the institution now known as Unity Environmental University has an annual unduplicated headcount of more than 9,100 full-time students, the largest in our history.
