Transfer Insights Series I
How customized articulation agreements expand access through affordable, flexible, and transparent bachelor’s degree completion pathways
By Dr. Heidi L Wilkes
Chief Learning Officer, Unity Environmental University
The Transfer Insights Series explores how thoughtfully designed transfer pathways help students continue their educational journeys while supporting strong academic partnerships between institutions. Drawing on my work developing articulation agreements throughout New England, this series examines both the student benefits and the collaborative academic processes that create successful transfer opportunities.
Students transfer for many reasons. Some want to complete a bachelor’s degree after earning an associate degree. Others are seeking new career opportunities, greater flexibility, or a more affordable way to continue their education.
Regardless of the reason, most students ask the same questions.
Will my credits transfer?
How many credits will count toward my bachelor’s degree?
How long will it take me to graduate?
How much will my bachelor’s degree cost after I transfer?
Will I have to repeat courses I have already completed?
These questions influence whether many students decide to continue their education at all.
Customized articulation agreements help answer those questions before students enroll. By creating affordable, flexible, and transparent bachelor’s degree completion pathways, they help students make informed academic and financial decisions while supporting successful transfer into bachelor’s degree programs.
What Does “Transfer-Friendly” Mean at Unity Environmental University?
Being transfer-friendly means more than accepting transfer credit.
It means working collaboratively with partner institutions to create transfer pathways that recognize prior academic achievement while ensuring students enter bachelor’s degree programs with the academic preparation necessary for success.
At Unity Environmental University, transfer pathways are designed to:
- maximize the appropriate application of transfer credit
- support affordable bachelor’s degree completion
- reduce unnecessary duplication of coursework
- provide students with a clear bachelor’s degree completion plan before they enroll
- preserve the academic quality and integrity of every Unity degree
- create flexible pathways that can evolve as academic programs and workforce needs change
This philosophy extends across multiple academic models, including both traditional 120-credit bachelor’s degrees and Unity’s innovative 90-credit Applied Bachelor’s Degree (ABS) programs.
Every pathway is designed individually because every institution and every academic program is different.
Why Do Articulation Agreements Matter?
Without a formal articulation agreement, transfer credit is often evaluated course by course during or after the student application process. Course-by-course evaluation is an important and appropriate part of transfer review, particularly when no established transfer pathway exists. However, because courses are evaluated individually, students may receive fewer credits toward degree requirements than they would through a thoughtfully designed program-to-program articulation agreement.
When that happens, students may need to complete additional coursework to satisfy bachelor’s degree requirements, increasing both the time and cost required to complete their degree.
A well-designed articulation agreement takes a different approach.
Rather than waiting until after admission to determine how individual courses apply, partner institutions work together to evaluate an associate degree program in its entirety and intentionally design a transfer pathway.
Students know in advance how their credits apply, what coursework remains, and the most efficient path to completing their bachelor’s degree.
That transparency helps students better understand the financial investment required to complete their degree. It supports affordability by maximizing the appropriate application of transfer credit, provides greater flexibility when comparing educational options, and allows students to make informed decisions before they enroll.
For institutions, it strengthens academic quality through intentional curriculum alignment and collaboration.
How Do Customized Transfer Pathways Help Students?
One advantage of developing customized articulation agreements is the opportunity to intentionally design academic pathways rather than simply evaluate individual transcripts.
Every pathway I develop has the same objective.
To maximize the appropriate application of transfer credit while ensuring students have the academic preparation needed to succeed in upper-level bachelor’s coursework.
Each articulation agreement identifies:
- the associate degree covered by the agreement
- the bachelor’s degree or degrees into which it transfers
- how completed coursework satisfies bachelor’s degree requirements
- the remaining coursework students complete at Unity Environmental University
- a recommended sequence for completing the bachelor’s degree
Because this information is established before a student transfers, students can compare educational options with confidence, understand the financial investment required to complete the degree, and avoid unexpected coursework after enrollment.
Instead of wondering how individual courses will be evaluated during or after admission, students can clearly see how their associate degree applies toward a bachelor’s degree and exactly what remains to graduate.
That level of transparency supports better academic planning, greater affordability, more informed financial decisions, and greater confidence throughout the transfer process.

As new articulation agreements are completed, additional associate degree and bachelor’s degree pathways will continue to be added.
How Are Transfer Pathways Developed?
As I worked with additional partner institutions, I realized that the strongest transfer pathways were not created by beginning with individual course comparisons.
Course descriptions, credit hours, prerequisites, and syllabi remain important parts of transfer evaluation.
However, the most productive conversations usually begin by understanding the associate degree as a complete academic program.
Questions such as these establish the academic context before individual courses are compared.
What is the purpose of the associate degree?
What are students expected to know and be able to demonstrate upon graduation?
How does general education support the program?
How do the Program Learning Outcomes align with bachelor’s-level expectations?
As I continued developing articulation agreements, I found myself following this same sequence of questions with each partner institution. That practical experience gradually evolved into what I now refer to as the Outcome-Based Transfer Mapping Framework, a methodology I continue to refine as new transfer partnerships are developed.
The next article in this series explores that methodology in greater detail.
Why Collaboration Matters
Every articulation agreement represents a shared commitment between institutions to student success.
Developing these pathways has allowed me to collaborate with academic leaders from the Community College System of New Hampshire, individual colleges throughout New Hampshire, and several Maine community colleges.
The strongest articulation agreements emerge through collaboration by reviewing curricula together, discussing Program Learning Outcomes, understanding institutional priorities, and focusing on what ultimately matters most, creating affordable, flexible, and transparent bachelor’s degree completion pathways that help students succeed.
Because every institution has unique academic strengths, every pathway is intentionally designed rather than built from a standard template.
Continuing the Conversation
Every articulation agreement begins with a conversation.
Whether you are a prospective transfer student, a faculty member, an academic advisor, or represent an institution interested in developing articulation pathways with Unity Environmental University, I welcome the opportunity to continue the conversation.
Our transfer pathways are intentionally designed to expand educational opportunity while supporting academic quality, affordability, flexibility, and student success.

How Unity Designs Customized Transfer Pathways
Many people assume articulation agreements begin by comparing individual courses.
In the next article, I explore why beginning with the associate degree as a complete academic program creates stronger articulation agreements than beginning with course comparisons alone. We’ll take a closer look at the Outcome-Based Transfer Mapping Framework and the collaborative process behind designing customized transfer pathways.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every associate degree receive the same transfer pathway?
Can my college develop a customized articulation agreement with Unity Environmental University?
Where can I see current transfer pathways?
Can I transfer my associate’s degree to Unity Environmental University?
Many students can. Unity Environmental University has worked with New England community colleges to develop transfer pathways for selected associate degree programs into both traditional 120-credit bachelor’s degrees and 90-credit Applied Bachelor’s Degree (ABS) programs.
The best place to start is by reviewing existing articulation agreements or contacting us to discuss your educational goals. Even if your college does not have a formal transfer agreement with Unity in place now, you may be able to develop one and, in the meantime, your coursework can be evaluated through our transfer evaluation process.
How does Unity determine whether my credits will transfer?
Transfer evaluation depends on several factors, including your associate degree, the bachelor’s degree you want to pursue, and whether a formal articulation agreement has been established between your institution and Unity Environmental University.
When an articulation agreement exists, students benefit from a transparent bachelor’s degree completion pathway that identifies how completed coursework applies toward degree requirements and what coursework remains. If no formal agreement exists, transfer credit is evaluated through Unity’s established transfer review process.
What is an Articulation Agreement?
An articulation agreement is a formal partnership between higher education institutions that identifies how an associate degree transfers into a bachelor’s degree program.
Rather than evaluating every student’s transcript individually, an articulation agreement establishes a customized transfer pathway in advance. It shows how completed coursework satisfies bachelor’s degree requirements, identifies remaining coursework, and provides students with a clear roadmap to degree completion.
How do articulation agreements help make a bachelor’s degree more affordable?
Affordability is one of the most important benefits of a well-designed articulation agreement.
By maximizing the appropriate application of transfer credit, articulation agreements can reduce the number of additional courses students need to complete after transferring. Fewer required courses translate into lower total tuition costs, faster degree completion, and faster time to career advancement.
Just as important, students understand the costs before they enroll, allowing them to make informed educational and financial decisions with greater confidence.
