2025 Commencement Speaker – Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson
Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is a renowned American astrophysicist and science communicator. Dr. Tyson’s fascination with the cosmos began at a young age. He studied at Harvard and Columbia University, earning a Ph.D. in astrophysics. Tyson’s research focuses on star formation, exploding stars, and the structure of the Milky Way. He is best known for his ability to make complex scientific concepts accessible to the general public through his books, television shows, and lectures. Tyson has served as the director of the Hayden Planetarium and is the host of the popular podcast “StarTalk.” His engaging personality and passion for science have made him a beloved figure in the scientific community and beyond. Distinguished environmentalist, Dr. Sylvia Washington, will be featured as Unity Environmental University’s May ’22 commencement speaker. Dr. Washington is a highly accomplished and successful environmental epidemiologist, environmental engineer, historian, and clinician with over 30 years of research experience working on the impact of industrial pollution on human health. Ms. Washington is the host of TV’s Xploration Nature Knows Best and co-founder of Big Blue & You, a nonprofit organization dedicated built to inspire and educate young people about ocean conservation using media and the arts. She studied Marine Science and Biology at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami, was the official spokesperson at the USA Science & Engineering Festival in 2018, and was named the 2018 Emerging Female Leader of the Year by EarthX.
