The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) in Unity is among a host of organizations that maintain partnerships and collaborative associations with Unity College.Several of Unity’s majors such as Sustainable Agriculture, pursue educational projects in association with MOFGA.
With this strong association as a backdrop, Unity’s new President Stephen Mulkey will participate in MOFGA’s signature event, The Common Ground Country Fair, slated for Friday, September 23 through Sunday, September 25, in Unity.
The fair celebrates rural living and agriculture. It is considered to be one of the most high profile county fairs in Maine emphasizing organic growing, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to Unity during the fair weekend.
On Saturday, September 24, President Mulkey will participate in a public policy teach-in on Global Climate Change at 2 p.m. in the Spotlight Stage tent. Also on the panel will be Dylan Voorhees of the Natural Resources Council of Maine and longtime MPBN meteorologist Lou McNally.
A Strong Connection to the Land from the Outset
From its founding in 1965 to the present, Unity College has been connected to the land through its curriculum and interests of its faculty, staff and students. Long before Unity became known asAmerica’s Environmental College, it was creating partnerships with various organizations that environmentally focused missions. Unity students have traditionally pursued internships with these organizations that share the environmental concerns of the College. Many public and private organizations in Maine employ Unity graduates, including the Department of Environmental Protection and Maine Warden Service.
Unity College employees will have the opportunity to attend the fair on Friday, September 23rdbeginning at noon. This provides a chance for many Unity College employees to have a relaxing and entertaining afternoon at the fair. Employees are encouraged to car-pool, walk, bike, or use any other mode of transportation that fits their personal style and values.
As a well-regarded authority on Global Climate Change, President Mulkey shares his perspectives on the subject in a variety of forums. He will be featured at two public events to discuss Global Climate Change in the coming weeks.
Climate Change Presentations by President Mulkey on September 28 and October 5
On September 28, President Mulkey will be a guest lecturer at the Unity College Centre for the Performing Arts (UCCPA) located at 42 Depot Street in Unity from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., for an Environmental Sustainability class taught by Adjunct Instructor Anna Fiedler and Professor Mick Womersley. The topic for the guest lecture will be Misunderstanding Climate Change: Science & Public Perception.
President Mulkey will again be a guest lecturer for the Environmental Sustainability class on October 5 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on the Unity College campus, Room 204 in the Parsons Wing of the Student Activity Center. Unity College is located at 90 Quaker Hill Road, Unity, Maine. The topic will be Economics & Ethics of Climate Change.
The lectures are free and open to the general public. Light refreshments will be available prior to each lecture.
